General

What is a union?

A union is formed when any group of employees decides they would rather bargain their work terms and conditions as a group rather than individually. That group approaches a known trade union such as Teamsters Local 979 seeking certification. The trade union circulates membership cards for employees to sign and then the Union files those cards along with an application for certification at the appropriate labour board.

What are my rights as a member covered by a collective agreements?

A copy of your Collective Agreement can be picked up at the Local Union office. Once you have received your copy, please read the agreement in its entirety. The Collective Agreement outlines your rights and responsibilities to the Company at which you are employed as well as the Company’s obligations to you.

Membership & Dues

How much are union dues and what do they pay for?

Union dues are a standard contribution that supports the services and protections provided to members. Dues fund collective bargaining, grievance representation, legal support, contract enforcement, health and safety advocacy, and member services. They also ensure the Union has the resources necessary to negotiate strong agreements and defend members’ rights in the workplace.

When do I become a union member?

You become a union member once your workplace is certified and you complete a membership card. Membership confirms that you are part of the bargaining unit represented by the Union and entitled to the rights, protections, and benefits outlined in the Collective Agreement. As a member, you also gain access to representation, grievance support, and the democratic processes of the Union.

Are union dues mandatory once a workplace is unionized?

Yes. Once a union is certified and a Collective Agreement is in place, union dues are required for all employees within the bargaining unit, as set out in the agreement and applicable labour laws. This ensures that all employees who benefit from the negotiated wages, protections, and representation contribute fairly to maintaining those services and the collective strength of the membership.
