General Teamsters Union Local 979 - The Rick Ashdown Memorial Scholarship
Applications may be obtained from the Local Union offices.
Guidelines for this scholarship program are as follows:
Eligibility: Applicants must be high school seniors who are children, step-children, or grandchildren, both natural and adopted, of Local Union 979 members who have been in good standing with the Local Union for at least one year. Children of deceased or retired members may also apply. The children or grandchildren of Local Union 979 employees and Executive Board are not eligible to participate in the program.
Application: Each applicant must provide General Teamsters Local No.979 with the following material:
A copy of the student’s high school transcript or equivalent.
Three (3) written recommendations from person such as a teacher, advisor, coach, pastor, neighbour, or possible an employer for whom applicants have performed part-time or summer work. These may be sent to the Local Union either by the applicant or by the person providing the written recommendation.
A written statement from the applicant outlining their qualifications, ambitions, reasons for seeking higher education, plans for the future and intended area of study and institution to be attended.

All material must be received by Teamsters Local Union No. 979 on or before Aug. 1st, 2026.
The applications of eligible participants will be given to a Scholarship Fund committee. This committee will review the material and select which of the applicants will receive scholarship awards.
